The region

The tour to Krakow is taking us quite off the general tourist track. Moreover, this particular gravel tour makes the most to avoid easy spots like the Elbe, unless it is fun road/track! The bikes gives us the chance to get off all beaten track and enjoy areas merely known to locals when going bikepacking. We do not stay monotonous on this tour, combining all thinkable surfaces and fully enjoying what a gravel bike can offer us!

Stages

Day 1 - Prague – Kutná Hora

Tarmac, path, gravel (90 km, 930 m up)

Starting through the city, but around a stream. Soon through small villages, along ponds and mild forrest. Checking medieval battlefileds and silver mines. Eventually, led by the lovely St. Barbara cathedral silouhete we get to Kutná Hora, great meal and a local draft beer ahead!

Day 2 - Kutná Hora – Litomyšl

Tarmac, gravel (105 km, 940 m up)

Unesco to Unesco in short. In long – off the beaten track, chateaux like Žleby, tiny towns Slatiňany, Třemošnice or Ronov. The Iron hills area, remote, lovely tracks, flying yet enjoying.

Day 3 - Litomyšl – Olomouc

Tarmac, gravel, forrest track (100 km, 530 m up)

Getting easier for short, over Hřebeč ridge, close to fortresses like Bouzov or Mírov, admiring the vievs, then down to the Moravian Amazon and the Morava river to Olomouc. Little Prague, young and lively town washing the dust off in a number of fountains.

Day 4 - Olomouc - Štramberk
Tarmac, gravel (90 km, 805 m up)

Out to the Bečva river, up from it to Helfštýn to hear the blacksmiths hammering the iron. Still out to the Beskydy foothills, exploring the hidden spots. Tonight we listen to Janáček music and eat the ears of the Turks made of gingerbread.

Day 5 - Štramberk – Oswiecim

Tarmac, gravel, field and forrest tracks and roads (130 km, 1150 m up)

Time to cross the border, eventually. First we fall into valleys and climb the hills, exploring the area of coal mining, Ostrava close to us, Karviná, Frýdek… huge polish lowlands and lakes. Ghost railway station amidst a forrest. Crazy ending next to the worst extermination camp of WWII – Auschwitz. Eating pierogy and drinking piwo se sokom tonight.

Day 6 - Oswiecim – Krakow

Tarmac, gravel (85 km, 250 m up)

Morning visit of the camp (for those who want and dare), then easy flight along the Vistula to Krakow. Meditating, lonely, hope for tailwind! Evening closing party in Krakow, the town to explore!
